New beginnings for Spring

Posted by Sarah Roy

Its been a time when many of us have taken the opportunity to take a closer look at our lives and perhaps try some new things.

This morning I thought I would download an app and try some mindful meditation time – this was going well until there was some seagull noise outside and the dogs in their exuberance to investigate used my groin as a shortcut to the window – maybe tomorrow!

In the olden days, when I was young, “Ethical” investment was very niche, and expensive due to the limited options available. Now there is never a month goes by that there isn’t a further fund launch under the “Ethical, Social & Governance” (ESG) banner.

ESG criteria are a set of standards for a company’s operations, that socially conscious investors use to screen potential investments. Environmental criteria consider how a company performs as a steward of nature – it’s not just a matter of eliminating tobacco and drugs. Social criteria examine how it manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and the communities where it operates. Governance deals with a company’s leadership, executive pay, audits, internal controls, and shareholder rights – things have come a long way and there are shades of green, with most investment houses offering a range of such options.

These funds are no longer as expensive, and due to ultimately investing in forward thinking and hence normally more successful companies, the trade- off of performance for trying to do something good is no longer applicable. Care of environment is important to us all, our children are rightfully having its importance instilled in them from the earliest opportunity – Personally, regardless of returns (although it can be nice as well ), investing at least something ethically gives me a sense of doing something good. We’d be pleased to discuss how you might do this as well.

Despite my good intentions, I still regularly I get lynched by my daughters when I miscalculate what waste goes in what bin – must try harder!
